You've received your boards and something's off — a reference designator is missing, a polarity mark isn't printed, or the whole legend layer is just gone. What Is PCB Silkscreen, and What Does It Do?
PCB silkscreen (also called the legend or overlay layer) is the printed layer of text and symbols on the top and/or bottom of a board — reference designators (R12, C8, U3), polarity marks for diodes and capacitors, pin-1 indicators, connector labels, test point names, warning symbols, logos, and revision or date codes. It doesn't carry current and isn't part of the board's electrical circuit — its job is to make the board readable to the humans (and sometimes machines) that assemble, test, inspect, and repair it.

Is Missing Silkscreen an Electrical Defect?

- Printing or adhesion issues. Less commonly, ink adhesion problems during the actual silkscreen printing step can cause markings to wear off or fail to cure properly.

- Assembly: Operators normally match components to positions using reference designators. Without them, assembly relies entirely on the BOM, pick-and-place file, and assembly drawing — workable, but slower and more error-prone, especially in high-mix, low-volume production.
- Polarity-sensitive components: Missing polarity marks on diodes, electrolytic capacitors, LEDs, and connectors raise the risk of a reversed component making it through assembly undetected.
- Test and debug: Missing test point labels slow down functional testing and field debugging, since technicians can't quickly identify what a given point should be reading.
- Traceability and compliance: If your product requires revision codes, date codes, UL marks, or serial/QR codes as part of its documentation trail, missing silkscreen in those specific areas can be a real compliance gap, not just a cosmetic one.
- Field service and repair: Technicians repairing a board months or years later rely on legible labels far more than the original design team ever did.
