They use the IPC-2221 standard and standard microstrip/stripline approximations — solid for early-stage design. For tight-tolerance, high-speed, or RF boards, confirm final values with a field solver and your fabricator’s stackup data.
For differential pairs like USB, HDMI, or DDR, start with the Differential Microstrip Impedance Calculator. Routing on an internal layer? Use the Stripline Impedance Calculator, then check Via Inductance and Capacitance for any layer transitions.
For impedance-related calculators, you’ll get the best results with your dielectric thickness, copper weight, and Dk. No stackup yet? Use NextPCB’s standard stackups as a starting reference.
