Robotics PCBs

Robots were initially created for royal entertainment in Western countries. It was until 1961 that an inventor named George Devol installed his robot Unimate at the General Motors plant in Trenton, New Jersey, that the first modern industrial use of the robot was attempted. This first time of the robot’s attempt in the work plant opened a new chapter in the modern industrial era.

 

The importance of robot in daily life and industry


Through decade years’ development, today’s manufacturing industry has benefited from the extensive use of robotics. Many jobs have been undertaking by automated machines, which significantly improved production efficiency. Because human energy is limited, but the robots can be set to work long hours to produce the same or even greater quantities of products during the manufacturing process. The use of robots in the plant can increase the number of finished products and decrease defective products in the output. And robots take over the dangerous and delicate work, which can reduce work harm to humans and increase the product yield. The idea of a factory without workers has been realized. 


Except for the assist in the factory floor, robots play an important role in space exploration and other tasks impossible for humans. For example, the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity have a lifespan that is longer than NASA had predicted, and far more than any crewed mission can complete. The Deep Impact probe that crashed into the comet operated at a power unmatched by humans. 


What’s more, modern robotics exist everywhere in humans’ daily life from computers to the smart refrigerator in house uses and to the robots for educational and entertainment use. Artificial intelligence has sneaked into every family and quietly changing people’s lifestyles. In conclusion, robotics can improve efficiency and security levels and provides higher levels of service. Robotics affects every aspect of work and home. 

 

The application of robotics PCBs


The main contribution of robotics is in the manufacturing industry; PCB manufacturers are no exception. Robotics brings many benefits for improving product efficiency, and in turn, PCB manufacturers also provide more advanced robotics PCB design and fabrication for the development of robotics in various fields. According to the application field, robots can be divided into industrial robots, domestic or household robots, medical robots, service robots, entertainment robots, military robots, space robots, hobby and competition robots. 


As the brain of the robot, the robot control system is the main factor that determines the function and performance of the robot. Robot components usually include five parts: control system, power supply, sensors, actions and feedback, and fuselage. The best choice for a robot’s control system is a microcontroller chip. Thus, PCBs are the essential parts of the robots.

Many types of PCBs can be found in robotics, such as flexible PCBs, rigid PCBs, flexible-rigid PCBs, multilayer PCBs, HDI PCBs, high-frequency PCBs, metal PCBs, etc. The robots with multifunction and long working time need metal PCBs and high-frequency PCBs for excellent heat dissipation and precise action. The robots used in space exploration need HDI PCBs and multilayer PCBs for complex function and specific command action. And the selecting of PCB material also need to consider the operating environment of robots. The robots with long running time need substrates with high heat-dissipating capability; the robots work in harsh and severe environment need high-temperature, high-pressure, corrosion resistance, and stable performance materials.
